CA: expired tags (not smogged) but paid registration: worst scenario?
I am disabled (with current placard) and have been sick in bed/ knee injury / mostly homebound for several months. I paid my car registration on time in Jan. 2016. However, I couldn’t leave home enough (barely 1x/week for groceries) to get my car air intake system repaired and the car smogged on time.
I am now starting to get out and am too weak to walk to the bus. I have been trying to get an appointment for a week at the repair shop. Hopefully the repairs will be done in a few days. Then I’ll smog it. I know I shouldn’t drive it til then, but need to for urgent healthcare, to walk in the pool at the gym as my doctor and PT have prescribed to rehab my legs, get groceries, and get the paperwork immediately for my IHSS caregiver to start helping me. I can’t get paratransit immediately. I have no one else to help me. The caregiver I found doesn’t own a car.
What’s the worst scenario if an officer sees me publicly parked or driving with expired tags, please?

write you a ticket or could possibly have it towed.
