HISTORY OF CASS COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

Cass County is a county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 99,478. Its county seat is Harrisonville. The county was organized in 1835 as Van Buren County, but was renamed in 1849 after U.S. Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan, who later became a presidential candidate.

Cass County is part of the Kansas City, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Overview History

Cass County was organized in 1873 and Fargo was selected as the county seat. The first county courthouse was built in 1874 and located at the present site of the Northern Pacific Depot. The building was moved to First Avenue South between Seventh and Eighth Streets and used as a YMCA and then a boarding house until it was torn down in 1967

A second county courthouse was built on Third Avenue South between Ninth and Tenth Streets. That courthouse is seen in the photograph above right. The 1883 Fargo City Directory states that the courthouse was under construction at that time. The estimated cost was $50,000. It was designed by the architectural firm Daniels & Proctor. Contractors for the masonry were Megar & Kelly. The building was under renovations when it burned down on November 17, 1903

The third Cass County courthouse (pictured in the postcard right) was built on the same site as the second courthouse (Third Avenue South between Ninth and Tenth Streets). It opened for business on July 31 1906 the building was 70×109 feet. It was built at a cost of $141,000.

Cass County Court Missouri

First known as Martin Van Buren in 1835, this county modified its name to Cass in 1849.

Although the clerk recorded specific directions for building a courthouse in Gregorian calendar month 1837 and known the superintendent, this order was rescinded at the could 1837 meeting, and therefore the court appointed another superintendent, John Cook. No further entries clarify the order, however the County Court Record will note that court was command at the courthouse in Harrisonville on February. 5 1838

Specifications entailed a 1-1/2-story, two-room, weather boarded building. One area was eighteen feet sq., and therefore the different fourteen by eighteen feet. 2 stone or brick fireplaces were to be in every finish, with the super of the chimneys completed with sticks and sensible lime mortar. the ground was to be ordered thus it’d not rock, shake or rattle.

Some speculate the building was ne’er erected. Others assume it absolutely was. No location was known, however Allen cosmonaut wrote in 1917 that he believed it absolutely was a log courthouse off the sq.

On Feb. 14, 1843, the court appointed Charles Sims superintendent to organize and submit an inspiration with price estimates to not exceed $3,000 for a permanent courthouse. this means that the previous courthouse was thought-about temporary. Sims submitted plans that the court approved in march one 843 and nominative a completion date on or before Sept. 1, 1844. Contractors were Henry Baker, John flute and George Rice. The two-story, brick building occupied the general public sq. that was enclosed by associate degree iron fence

Figure 1: An order issued by the court in could 1860 for building a replacement $15,000 courthouse caused involved voters to sign a petition complaintive such action attributable to depressed monetary conditions. They inspired the court to rethink the order. Irrespective this protest, the court proceeded to contract for producing the brick.

War erupted and everyone thought of building was laid-off. Troopers quartered their horses within the courthouse throughout the war, and at the conclusion of hostilities, the court declared the building unfit for occupancy. In 1865 sale of the three hundred thousand, 300000 unused bricks that had been factory-made 5 years earlier for the planned courthouse provided funds for repairing the 1843-44 building that served Cass County till the tip of the century.

A petition conferred to the court in Gregorian calendar month 1895 asked the court to develop plans and specifications for a $45,000 courthouse. W. C. Root, AN designer from Kansas town, role player the plans for Cass County’s third courthouse, that was inbuilt 1897

Figure 2: Thomas Wilson contracted for the building in December 1895 for about $40,000. Citizens paid $45,000 for the building by direct taxation in two years, which they had authorized in an election March 14, 1896. W. B. Harrison superintended construction.

The three-story, yellow brick courthouse measured 93 by 78 feet. Dominating the facade is the off-center tall clock tower. Cornerstone ceremonies for Cass County’s present courthouse took place April 10, 1897
