Types of Driver Licenses in Missouri

The state of Missouri requires any person operating a motor-driven vehicle on public roadways to have a valid sate-issued driver’s license. There are different types of driver licenses in Missouri.

1. Commercial driver’s license (CDL)

This type of license allows drivers to operate certain commercial vehicles inclduing school buses, city buses, tour buses, tankers, tractor trailers, delivery trucks, construction vehicles, and vehicles transporting hazardous materials. The commercial driver’s license is categorized into three classes: Class A, Class B, and Class C.

A Missouri Class A commercial driver’s license is required for drivers who operate vehicles with a gross combination weight (GCWR) of 26, 001 pounds or more provided the GCWR of the vehicles(s) being towed is in excess of 10, 000 pounds.

A Class B commercial driver’s license is issued to drivers who operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26, 001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle(s) not heavier than 10, 000 pounds.

A Class C commercial driver’s license is issued to drivers  operating single unit vehicles that do not fall under the Class A or Class B categories, but used to carry 16 or more passengers or hazardous material. This type of license is also issued to drivers operating a school bus with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds.

2. Class E driver’s license

This type of license, also known as chauffeur’s allows drivers to operate a vehicle or vehicles for pay in Missouri.  A Class E license allows a driver to operate vehicles used to :

• Carry 14 passengers or less. Such vehciles include shuttle vehicles, taxis, and school buses not exceeding 26,00 lbs.
• Transport property or goods. Such vehicles includefood delivery vehicles, shop vans, and UPS vehicles.

This license is also required for drivers who operate a vehicle that belongs to another person or business , and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26, 001 pounds, and do not carry hazardous materials. An applicant must be 18 years of age to obtain a Class E license in Missouri. Other requirements to obtain a Class E license are:

• Pass a Class E written examination.
• Take a vision test
• Pay applicable fees
• Take a behind-the-wheel driving test (Applies to those who do not possess a standard Missouri Class F driver’s license.

3. Class F drivers license

This is a basic operator license that allows a driver to operate  non-commercial vehicles that do not require class A, B,C, or E licenses. Examples of vehicles that require this type of license are recreational vehicles for personal use.  A person must be of 18 years of age to obtain a Class F drivers license in Missouri.

4. Class M drivers license

A Class M license is issued to persons who have demonstrated ability to ride a motorcycle or motor vehicle on Missouri roadways. The basic requirements to obtain this license are:

• Pass the Class F and Class M written exam.
• Pass vision exam
• Pass road skills test

5. Graduated driver license

There is also Missouri’s graduated driver license whereby first time drivers aged between 15 and 18 years old to complete a period of driving with a licensed driver and restricted riving before getting a full Class F driver license.  A person under 16 years of age is issued with an  instruction permit  which allows him or her to  drive with a licensed family member ,  legal guardian  or a qualified driving instructor who is over 21 years of age in the front seat passenger seat. At the age of 16 , the driver may apply for an intermediate license which allows him or her to drive ralone except during late night curfew. The driver must use seat belts be free of alcohol and drugs, and obey traffic rules.
