Kansas City Missouri municipal court was established to adjudicate general city ordinance violations within the boundaries of Kansas City municipality. Typically, the municipal court acts on matters such as minor traffic violations, code enforcement, animal control, and misdemeanor offenses.
Kansas City Missouri municipal court has a long and rich history which dates back to 1827 when the first county court was established. At the time, it was referred to as the court of common pleas with original and appellate jurisdiction. The common pleas court was later replaced by a criminal court with jurisdiction over the county.
Following an upsurge of juvenile delinquency and general crime within Kansas City, municipal courts we created under a new charter. This was in response to the emergence of an unlawful vigilante committee that proposed the hanging of law breakers. Before the establishment of the municipal court, the enforcement of laws in Kansas City was a local affair whereby convicted law breakers were required to work in municipal farms and quarries. In 1939, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was formed as a crime-fighting unit with legal jurisdiction throughout Kansas City. The Kansas City Missouri Court system worked in conjunction with the Kansas City Police Department.
By the late 19th century, the Kansas City municipal court had become fully functional with modern construction and qualified judges. Currently, there are two full-time judges appointed by the County Commission, and are granted the authority under the state law to adjudicate maters under their jurisdiction. However, the court is considered a court of limited jurisdiction as it has the authority only over cases that occur within the boundaries of Kansas City municipality.
The Kansas City Missouri Municipal Court has undergone rigorous transformation since the 1800s to be a court of law that protects the rights of citizens and provides them with a place to obtain a fair and impartial hearing.
If you received a ticket and are unsure whether it qualifies for amendment, see our guide on how Missouri speeding tickets work and what your options are before the court date.
